A porcelain veneer is extremely thin and cemented onto the front surface and edge of the tooth. It does not compromise the tooth in any way and cannot affect the development of tooth decay; rather, a porcelain veneer protects the tooth from wear and bacterial influence on the front surface of the tooth.

Of course, a porcelain veneer must be:

– properly made, i.e. precise
– high-quality and perfectly cemented
– the tooth underneath must be properly and well protected before cementation

Tooth decay on a tooth with a porcelain veneer is possible not because of the veneer itself, but because it can develop in the same way as general tooth decay. A tooth with a veneer can be normally repaired and treated from the back side of the tooth. Our experience confirms that decay on teeth with porcelain veneers never develops underneath the veneer itself; if it occurs, it develops on the back side of the natural tooth, which would have happened even without the veneer.

Over the years, if treatment of a tooth with a porcelain veneer becomes necessary, the treatment can be performed normally from the back side of the tooth and the veneer does not need to be touched at all.

In general, complications with porcelain veneers do not occur. They are a permanent and aesthetically beautiful solution for teeth when needed and when the patient wants improved dental aesthetics.
